It was during the drive home that my best friend asked me if I had a site on a website called Xanga. After telling him I didn't, we suggested that I, being a bit of a writer, should get one. So that swat brings me here today, my best friend.
I am often amazed at the fact when my best friend suggest something for me to do, I find myself doing it eventually. I do believe that is one of the characteristics of a good friend, someone who knows you well enough to be able to make certain suggestions at proper times. I have a host of people that make suggestions to me on a daily basis, but to few of them have the authority in my life to make such suggestions.
The authority I am speaking of isn't the right to rule over my life, but instead to be someone of importance in my life. Believe me when I say I don't need another boss, the ones I have at work are enough for me. What I do need, and have very few of, are friends that will help me make the right choices in life.
Of all the people I know, very few are given the title of "friend". Most remain acquaintances. The ones who do make it to "friends" are those with which I share a special bond, or a common denominate greater than just working at the same place or being interested in the same things. It happens when we are willing to share something, maybe only between the two of us, things like joy and pain.
That is only part my definition of what a friend is, the other part is a bit tricky and the hardest to find. A friend also needs to be someone who will tell you when you're screwing up, and then help you, any way they can, get back on track. If someone is only willing to do the first and disregard the second then what is the point, all you have is a boss and not a friend.
After all this the other things that you have in common, and do for fun are just icing on the cake of life. You don't need lots of friends, because life isn't about being popular. I have a few friends, fewer great and one best friend. They make my life real, and worth getting up on those mornings that you just want to stay in bed. I thank God for them every morning and every night, just for having them in my life.
And that's all I have to say, about that. |
